About Us

The Hamden Municipal Employees Federal Credit Union (HMEFCU) has been in business since 1962. It was a dream of several municipal employees to start a credit union, which is a member owned, not for profit cooperative financial institution. The members pool their savings, lend them to one another, and own the organization where they save, borrow, and obtain related financial services. We have grown from that small beginning into a $6 million organization with over 1,400 members.

We at HMEFCU offer many financial services, which include: a free ATM debit card program, free checking including overdraft protection, free online banking and bill pay, ATMs with no surcharge and very competitive loan and CD rates.

We have offered ATM debit cards since 2002. The card is tied directly into the member’s checking account and allows them to make purchases anywhere VISA is accepted. The member is only allowed to spend as much as he/she has in their checking account. These ATM cards are also linked to our ATMs which are surcharge free for any member.

We have offered checking accounts with overdraft protection for many years. The first fifty checks are free. We have recently linked the checking accounts into our online banking and bill pay program. While online a member can check their balances, transfer funds from their accounts to another account, pay all their bills without writing checks or putting a stamp on an envelope. We also offer direct deposit into the checking or savings account.

HMEFCU has always offered competitive loan rates and periodically offer loan specials to our members which are well below market rate for personnel loans. Our members enjoy a 24 hour turnaround on all loan applications, which is very impressive compared to our peers.

HMEFCU also is proud of our credit counseling service that is offered to all members free of charge. Many of our members, who had credit histories that were compromised while in college, are taught how to upgrade their credit score, and as a result have been able to qualify for better percentage rates on their mortgages.

We have also started a new gift card program. For a small fee, anyone can purchase a VISA gift card in any denomination from $10 to $1000. These cards are used anywhere where you can use VISA, and are safer than cash. The members would be able to purchase these cards for holidays, anniversaries, birthdays or any other occasion.

HMEFCU has a Board of Directors, made up of nine members of the credit union. We also have members on a loan committee, a credit committee and a supervisory committee. These are all volunteer positions, but exemplify the dream of our founders that we are truly a cooperative run by the membership.

Anthony Natale

In September 2005 he became the third manager in the history of HMEFCU. He retired from the Hamden Police Department as a sergeant on August 31, 2005, after working there for 21 ½ years. He received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from CSCU in 1989. He lives in Hamden with his wife Barbara, and his two sons Jeffrey and Matthew.

Linda Vanacore

Linda will be working at the credit union seven years on Valentine’s Day 2007. She and her husband Ron have been for 38 years. They have two sons, Ron who is married to Alisa, and Mike. She now lives in the house she grew up in with her Mom, Ron, four cats, her dog Halley and her horse Sable.

Judy Frodel

Judy has been working at the credit union for five years. She retired from the Town of Hamden, after working 25 years as a clerk typist. She lives in Hamden with her husband, Paul a retired Hamden Fireman, and her two sons Eric and Chris.
